Arlen Davis "Dave" Matt-ne-ah Masqua, 65, of the Kickapoo Tribe in Kansas Reservation, passed away on April 28, 2010 at the Sabetha Community Hospital. He was born on October 3, 1944 in Horton, Kansas the sixth of twelve children born to Leroy Masqua and Julia Mjissepe Green. Dave graduated from Mayetta High School in Mayetta, Kansas. In 1964 he served in the United States Navy from 1964 to 1968 and served two tours in Vietnam. Dave served for ten years with the Prairie Band Potawatomi Fire Department as the assistant fire chief. He was a member of the American Legion War Post 415, Kii-kaa-poa-wa-ta-the-a. Dave dedicated many years with the Kickapoo Tribe in Kansas. He was a forerunner in Education for the members of the Kickapoo Tribe in Kansas by implementing and serving ten years on the Education Committee and was on the Kickapoo Tribal Code Committee. He was instrumental in the development and implementation of the Kickapoo Fire Department and retired as the Kickapoo Fire Chief. He also served on the Kickapoo Tribal Council for one term. He is survived by his spouse, Aletha Jean Hale of the home and children, LaVern Hale, Jeannette Hale Urista, Rayne Ann Hale and John Hale all of Mayetta, Kansas; brother, Calvin Masqua of Lawrence, Kansas; three sisters, Bernadette Thomas of Horton, Kansas, Karen Cadue of Lawrence, Kansas and Jeannette Littlesun of Pawnee, Oklahoma; five grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. Native American Church Services will be held at 6:00 P.M.at the Kickapoo Community Building on the Kickapoo Reservation on Saturday, May 1, 2010 and interment will be Sunday, May 2, 2010 at the She-wa-ka-ah Cemetery. Friends may call on Friday and Saturday at the Dishon-Maple-Chaney Mortuary in Horton, Kansas who is in charge of arrangements.
