Obituary

Augusta Neoma Smith, 97, of Everest, Kansas, passed away on May 9, 2011 at the Hospice Of Arizona in Sun City, Arizona. She was born on August 20, 1913 in Goff, Kansas the daughter of Clarence and Margaret Malloy Denton. Augusta was a homemaker and a member of the First Christian Church in Everest, Kansas. She was a devout Christian and helped many, many children world wide gain their education by sponsoring them from elementary school all the way through high school through the Children's Christian Foundation. Some ended up going to universities here in the US and would call her and want to come to Kansas to meet her. She quietly went about helping the elderly and making sure she was a friend to the lonely and forgotten. She did hospice work before there was a hospice by comforting those that needed love and understanding that were confined to nursing homes. Besides supporting other Christian foundations, for years she contributed to Oral Roberts Ministries in Tulsa, Oklahoma and did volunteer work for the 700 club. She introduced countless individuals to Jesus and helped them by being there when they needed support. On February 21, 1932 she married Charles F. Smith in Horton, Kansas. Charles and Augusta farmed in the Everest Community for nearly eighty years. He preceded her in death on April 23, 1976. Survivors include three sons, Carol (Ruthie) Smith of Everest, Kansas, Charles (Nancy) Smith of Nebraska City, Nebraska and John (Sandy) Smith of Bella Vista, Arkansas; two daughters, Margaret Prentice of Ojai, California and Kay Gerjarusak of Apache Junction, Arizona; sister, Avis Hahn of Lakin, Kansas; twelve grandchildren; twenty three great grandchildren and six great great grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her parents, sister, Alfreida Ledbetter and a brother, Alvin Denton. Funeral services will be at 10:30 A.M. on Saturday, May 14, 2011 at the Dishon-Maple-Chaney Mortuary in Horton, Kansas where the family will greet friends from 10:00 A.M. until service time. Burial will be at the Miller Cemetery east of Everest, Kansas. Memorials may be sent to the First Christian Church Everest, Ks. or Abundant Life Hospice, Hiawatha, Ks.
