Betty Jane Means, 88, of Everest, Kansas, passed away on Monday, April 25, 2011 at the Tri-County Manor in Horton, Kansas where she had made and enjoyed many friendships with her caregivers. She was born on October 17, 1922 in Huron, Kansas the daughter of Irvin George and Genevieve Reed Sloan. Betty married Ted Hutchison in January of 1938 at Huron, Kansas. Ted passed away in August of 1962. During her marriage to Ted, Betty was a homemaker and participated with him in operation of the Allis Chalmers Dealership in Everest. In April of 1964 she married Tom Means at Everest. They spent many years together developing a successful farming and cattle operation south of Everest and enjoyed extensive travel during their retirement years. Betty was a member of the St. Leo's Catholic Church. She enjoyed flower and vegetable gardening, quilting, and was a great cook. She dearly loved spending time with each of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Tom also preceded her in death in May of 2010 as did her beloved dog, Rusty, on February 8, 2011. Rusty had been with them for seventeen years. Survivors include two daughters, Peggy and husband Jerry Volenec of Brentwood, California and Sharon and husband Ben Green of Indian Head Park, Illinois; a son, Tom and wife Shirley Hutchison of Bella Vista, Arkansas; seven grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren. Betty was also preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Peggy Jean Sloan. Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 A.M. on Friday, April 29, 2011 at the St. Leo's Catholic Church in Horton, Kansas. Burial will be at the Old Huron Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the St. Leo's Catholic Church and may be sent in care of the mortuary.
