Carol J. Mink Speer, 68, of rural Horton, Kansas formerly of Atchison, Kansas passed away on Saturday, May 4, 2013 at the St. Luke's Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri. Carol was born on June 17, 1944 in Horton, Kansas the daughter of Glen and Bertha Stirton Wilson. Carol worked in the meat department for Arnesberg Grocery for many years. She then worked as a florist at the Flower Shop and Always Blooming in Atchison, Kansas. Carol was a member of the First Christian Church in Atchison, served on the Atchison Park Committee, and was a former Girl Scout leader. She enjoyed flowers, gardening, cooking, making cakes, nature walks and bird watching. Carol married Jerry Mink in June of 1963 in Horton, Kansas. He preceded her in death on June 19, 1997. She then married Bill Speer on August 27, 2001 in Eureka Springs, Arkansas. He survives of the home. Other survivors include three daughters, Sondra Jean Mink of Atchison, Kansas, Lisa Merz of Muscotah, Kansas and Angie Kreider of Horton, Kansas; three sons, Michael Mink of Kansas City, Missouri, Frank Speer of Troy, Kansas and Doug Speer of Horton, Kansas; three sisters, Norma Pederson of Muscotah, Kansas, Violet Thorne of Chanute, Kansas and Judy Wilson of Kansas City, Missouri; eighteen grandchildren and three great grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her parents, a daughter, Rhonda Hess, sister, Betty Sawyer and brother, Bill Wilson. Funeral services will be at 11:00 A.M. on Tuesday, May 7, 2013 at the Dishon-Maple-Chaney Mortuary in Horton, Kansas where the family will greet friends Monday evening from 7 to 8:30 P.M. Burial will be at the Horton Cemetery. Memorials may be sent to the Carol Speer memorial fund to be designated later and may be sent in care of the mortuary.
