Charlotte Zoe
Thompkins
Nov 11, 1932 — Oct 29, 2022
Kansas City
Charlotte Zoe Woodson , the youngest child of Charles "Boss" Woodson and Fernnella (Walker) Woodson, was born November 11, 1932, in Horton, Kansas and went home to be with the Lord on October 29, 2022. Known as Zoe by her family and Charlotte by others, her father was a farmer and at age three, her first daily chore was feeding the chickens. Her mother tried teaching her to be a homemaker, but she preferred the outdoors or hiding in the basement and watching the mice scurry around. At the tender age of six, she was bussed 12 miles from home to a rural elementary school in Effingham, KS, for the purpose of integration. Despite the cruelty and tears she remembered enduring that school year, she remained hopeful and kind to everyone there. It was soon discovered that she had an exceptional talent for music. Her mother and aunt taught her to play piano, and she began professional vocal training at age 8. In her first year of junior high school, she also took up the clarinet and excelled playing in the band, orchestra, and a small jazz band. While attending Horton High School she achieved one of her proudest moments by winning the Kansas state soloist singing competition. After graduating, she followed her brother Charles to Seattle, Washington, where she enrolled at the University of Washington and majored in music. To pay for classes, she worked part-time at Boeing and waitressed at a popular café. It was at the café where she met her future husband, James Thompkins. He would come in, buy one cup of coffee, and sit for hours without making eye contact or speaking to her except to place his order. Eventually, she asked him how long it was going to take before he asked her out. The rest was history. Three daughters were born from their union: Fern, Marcia, and Cheryl. Charlotte even taught her daughters to sing three-part harmony as a trio beginning when her youngest was two years old. After becoming a mother, Charlotte began working for the King County Department of Social Services, and in 1960 the family moved to Southern California. Charlotte leveraged her county experience into a position in the Los Angeles County Department of Social Services where she declined several supervisory promotions to be available for her family but remained employed for 35 years. After the death of her husband, Charlotte went to Kansas City, Kansas in 2006 to care for her aging siblings "for a couple of months". She never returned to California because, as she said with a smile, "I just love the peace and quiet of small-town life". Charlotte's greatest love was her love for the Lord. She showed her love for Him by serving her church as choir director and worship leader for decades and serving its members by volunteering wherever and whenever there was a need. She is fondly remembered by a multitude of people for her generosity, sincerity, and love that were freely poured out to all. Her second greatest love was her grandchildren; attending every event, hosting parties, spending hours at the park, teasing and playing together, teaching them about the Lord and lavishing them with her love. Charlotte Zoe was superseded in death by her parents, husband James, sister Ada, brother Charles, oldest and youngest daughters Fern and Cheryl, and her granddaughter Jessica. She leaves to mourn her middle daughter Marcia, her dearly loved grandson Cameron, several "play" children, and innumerable cousins and friends. Charlotte will be laid to rest at Kennekuk Cemetery in Horton, the town she loved, alongside her parents and sister. Funeral services will be at 1:00 P.M. on Monday, November 7, 2022 at the Dishon-Maple-Chaney Mortuary in Horton, Kansas with burial to follow at the Kennekuk Cemetery.
