Donald A. Lanter, 90, of Everest, Kansas, passed away Wednesday, September 7, 2011 at the Horton Community Hospital. He was born on August 24, 1921 in rural Everest, Kansas the son of Bruce Thomas Lanter and Grace "Arline" (Dodge) Lanter. Donald graduated from Everest High School in 1936. He served with the U.S. Coast Guard during WW II from September 11, 1942 until January 26, 1946. After his service he returned to the Everest area to farm. Donald and his brothers farmed together for several years. In January of 1977 Donald joined the Union State Bank in Everest as the Agricultural Representative and still farmed in the evenings and on weekends. On December 3, 1981, he was appointed the President and retired from that position in 1988. He stayed on the Board of Directors until 2009. Donald was a member of the Everest Christian Church where he served as a deacon and elder and also served as Chairman of the Board, the Everest American Legion, Denton Masonic Lodge, Keystone Kops of the Abdallah Shriners. He was a former Everest High School Board member and was a former Boy Scout and 4-H leader of the Everest 4-Leaf Clovers. On November 21, 1948 he married Helen Lewis in Maryville, Missouri. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Helen. Other survivors include a son, Larry (Debbie) Lanter of rural Everest, Kansas; brother, Richard (Donna) Lanter of Horton, Kansas; sisters, Helen Coffelt of Topeka, Kansas and Ruth (Carol) Smith of rural Everest, Kansas; six grandchildren Michael (Bailey) Lanter, Nicholas Lanter, Bridget (Pat) Streeter, Michele (Tony) Kimmi, Lindsey (Mitchell) Bowen, Ryan (Jeni) Lanter, and eleven great grandchildren, Tiffin Lanter, Mitchell and Marcus Welch, Ashley, Kaelyn and Trenton Kimmi, Kale, Chase and Mason Bowen and Crayton and Raelyn Lanter. Don was preceded in death by his parents, son, Gary Lanter, three brothers, Robert, Roy and Lloyd Lanter and a great granddaughter, Taylor Kimmi. Funeral services will be at 2:00 P.M. on Sunday, September 11, 2011 at the Dishon-Maple-Chaney Mortuary in Horton, Kansas where the family will greet friends on Saturday evening from 6:30 to 7:30 P.M. Military Graveside rites with burial will be at the Horton Cemetery. Memorials may be sent to the Everest Christian Church in care of the mortuary.
