Obituary

Esther Marie Scalapino, 95, of Everest, Kansas passed away on May 2, 2010 at The Pine's in Hiawatha, Kansas. Mrs. Scalapino was born in Troy, Kansas on April 5, 1915 the daughter of Cecil and Anna May Baldwin Yates. She grew up in Horton, graduated from high school there and attended Emporia Teachers College for one year. She lived in the Horton and Everest area most of her life. On August 5, 1936, she married Charles Scalapino in Everest. He preceded her in death on September 9, 1997. She was a former member of the Everest United Methodist Church and transferred her membership upon its closing to the Horton United Methodist Church. She was also a member of the Everest Historical Society and a charter member of the Blue Ribbon Unit. Esther is survived by her daughters; Mariann & husband Nelson Thornton of Winterset, Iowa and Nancy & husband Richard Carr of Lenexa, Kansas; three grandchildren, Deborah Hosty of Lenexa, Kansas, Bridget Briel of Des Monies, Iowa and Marilyn Haggerty of Overland Park, Kansas and six great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Charles William Yates and Guy Raymond Yates. Funeral services will at 2:00 P.M. on Saturday, May 8, 2010 at the Dishon-Maple-Chaney Mortuary in Horton, Kansas where the family will greet friends from 1:00 P.M. until service time. Burial will be at the Miller Cemetery east of Everest, Kansas. Memorials may be made to the Pines of Hiawatha and may be sent in care of the mortuary.
