Ethel E. Thompson, 97, of Wichita, Kansas, formerly of Horton, Kansas, passed away on December 16, 2008 at the Lakepoint Nursing and Rehab Center in Wichita, Kansas where she had been a resident since January, 2000. She was born on September 6, 1911, in Brown County, near Willis, Kansas, she was the second youngest of nine children born to Frank and Cora Figley Greer. She attended Mission Center Country School and graduated from Willis High School in 1931. Ethel married Marvin Thompson on March 19, 1932 in Horton, Kansas. They farmed and ran a dairy in Brown County all of their married lives until retiring to Horton in 1973. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women in Horton. She was actively involved in the Mt. Pleasant Community Assn. for many years and sold Avon in and around Horton. In 2000 Ethel made a decision to move to Wichita to be near her two daughters and their families. Marvin preceded her in death on January 4, 1981. In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by a grandson, Rick Barton, four brothers, Auta, George, John and Claudie Greer, four sisters, Goldie McKeon, Omel Irving, Edythe Knudson and Martha Jacobson. Survivors include daughters, Connie and husband Chuck Barton of Clearwater, Kansas and Sharon and husband Gene Willich of Hutchinson, Kansas; five grandchildren, Shelly Spruill and husband Shawn of Wichita, Kansas, Barry Barton of Wichita, Kansas, Genae Denver and husband Greg of Manhattan, Kansas, Mike Willich and wife Cindy of Wichita, Kansas, Corey Willich and wife Sheri of Blue Springs, Missouri and ten great grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, December 20, 2008 at the Dishon-Maple-Chaney Mortuary in Horton, Kansas where the family will greet friends on Friday from 7:00 to 8:30 P.M. Burial will be at the Wheatland Cemetery west of Horton, Kansas. Memorials may be sent to the Horton Community Hospital or the Horton United Methodist Church in care of the mortuary.
