Obituary

Francis "Dean" Cox, 82, of Everest, Kansas passed away on May 1, 2011 at the KU Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas. He was born on December 12, 1928 in Hardy, Nebraska the son of Keith V. and Inez Irene Underhill Cox. Dean graduated from the Scandia, Kansas High School in 1947. He then attended Central Radio and Television Schools in Kansas City, Missouri in 1948. In 1950 he attended the Chillicothe Business College at Chillicothe, Missouri. On December 21, 1950 he married Eva Nelle Lewis in Chillicothe, Missouri. Dean was drafted in the U.S. Army on January 12, 1951 where he served during the Korean Conflict being discharged on December 25, 1952. Dean and Eva moved to Everest, Kansas in 1961 when Dean became the Station Agent of the Missouri Pacific Railroad in Everest. He then went on to become the Terminal Manager in St. Joseph, Missouri for a number of years until he became the Senior Implementation Analyst. He retired from the Missouri Pacific Railroad and Union Pacific in 1986 after thirty six years of service. After his retirement Dean and his railroad friends would still get together for dinner and socialize. He was a member and Past Commander of the Everest American Legion Post, fifty year member of the Bellevue, Nebraska A.F.@ A.M. Lodge, Mount Zion Commandery #5, Knights Templar of Plattsmouth, Nebraska and the Eastern Star Wathena, Kansas Chapter. He also served on the Rural Water District #2 Board form 1991 to 1995. Dean loved to spend time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren who were very precious to him. He also enjoyed Big Joe Polka music. Survivors include his wife of sixty years, Eva Nelle Cox of the home, Everest, Kansas; daughter, Marcia (Jim) Richling of Horton, Kansas; son, Greggory Cox of Robinson, Kansas; four grandchildren, Bonnie Cox (Ian Stewart) of Huntersville, North Carolina, Shelby (Jaime) Richling of Junction City, Kansas, Derrick (Heidi) Richling of Newton, Kansas, Riley Richling (Michelle Wellman) of Horton, Kansas; two great grandchildren, Tobi Stewart and Tyson Richling; a brother, Donald Cox of Scottsville, Kansas and a sister, Betty Jo Lowman of Concordia, Kansas. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, May 7, 2011 at the Dishon-Maple-Chaney Mortuary in Horton, Kansas where the family will greet friends on Friday evening from 7:00 to 8:00 P.M. Memorials may be made to the Everest American Legion or the Basic Cancer Research Scholarship fund and may be sent in care of the mortuary.
