Obituary

Helen Elizabeth Coffelt, 96 of Topeka, Kansas, passed away on Wednesday, September 9, 2015 at the Homestead Assisted Living Center in Topeka, Kansas. She was born on September 20, 1918 in Everest, Kansas the daughter of Bruce and Arline Dodge Lanter. Helen graduated from Everest High School in 1936. After high school she went to work for the Union State Bank in Everest. On September 20, 1941 she married Raymond C. Coffelt at her parents home in Everest, Kansas. Helen and Raymond moved to Hillsboro, Kansas in 1959 where Helen worked for Groening Clothiers. After retiring in 1988 they moved to Hiawatha, Kansas. When Raymond passed away on March 23, 2008, Helen decided to move to Topeka, Kansas to be closer to her family. Helen was a longtime member of the Everest Christian Church, VFW Ladies Auxiliary #7285, American Legion Auxiliary, 50 year member of the Order Of The Eastern Star (Wathena Chapter 413), and a past member of the Mentor Study Club in Hillsboro, Kansas. Helen enjoyed flowers, doing needlework, and traveling. In 1974 she was the overall winner in display of arts and crafts at the Kansas Federation of Women's Clubs Fourth District Convention in Hillsboro, Kansas. Survivors include a daughter, Janet (Jim) Shaw of Topeka, Kansas; son, R.C. Coffelt of Tulsa, Oklahoma; sister, Ruth Smith of Everest, Kansas; brother, Richard Lanter of Horton, Kansas; three grandchildren, Debbie (John) Jones, Christy (Eddie) Tomanek and Christopher (Brady Jones) Coffelt; three great grandchildren, Trevor Tomanek, Kailani Jones and William Jackson Coffelt. She was also preceded in death by her parents and four brothers, Robert, Donald, Lloyd and Roy Lanter. Funeral services will be at 10:30 A.M. on Monday, September 14, 2015 at the Dishon-Maple-Chaney Mortuary in Horton, Kansas where the family will greet friends on Sunday afternoon from 3:00 to 4:30 P.M. Burial will be at the Horton Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Everest Christian Church or Grace Hospice, both may be sent in care of the mortuary.
