Joseph D. Potter, 85, of Horton, Kansas, passed away on Saturday, February 25, 2012 at the Midland Hospice House in Topeka, Kansas. He was born on January 31, 1927 in White Cloud, Kansas the son of Herman and Ethel Dutton Potter. Joe was a corpsman in the United States Navy, serving during WW II. He married Betty L. Potterf on May 27, 1950 in Horton, Kansas at the Christian Church. After leaving the Navy, Joe farmed west of Horton, then worked for Kurtz Construction in Horton, prior to going to work for the Unified School District #430 in Horton as a custodian and bus driver retiring in the early 1990's from custodial duties he continued on as a bus driver for many years. He was a member of the Horton Masonic Lodge and the Shriner's. Joe is survived by his wife, Betty of 61 years and their five children; Tim and Linda Potter of Rock Hill, South Carolina, Cindy and Steve Meerpohl of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Phyllis and Dennis Adcock, Plattsmouth, Nebraska, Phil Potter of Hoyt, Kansas and Bill and Tina Potter of Lyndon, Kansas. There are fifteen grandchildren, and twenty five great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. Joe has two sisters, Wynnie Bielak of Lee Summit, Missouri and Mary Meers of Mountain Home, Arkansas. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister Harriet Oakley. Funeral services will be at 11:00 A.M. on Thursday, March 1, 2012 at the Dishon-Maple-Chaney Mortuary in Horton, Kansas. A Masonic service will be held at 7:00 P.M. on Wednesday evening at the mortuary where the family will greet friends following the service until 8:30 P.M. Burial will be at the Horton Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Horton First Baptist Church or the Midland Hospice House both may be sent in care of the mortuary.
