Kathleen Elizabeth (Schuetz) Ruth, 81, of Horton, Kansas, passed away on Tuesday, October 30, 2012 at the Horton Community Hospital in Horton, Kansas. She was born on April 30, 1931 at the Sabetha, Kansas hospital, the daughter of Roy O. and Helen Scheid Schuetz. Kay graduated from Horton High in 1949. Kay was a homemaker and was employed by USD #430 as a para for many years. Kay married Bob Ruth on April 19, 1950 at St. Leo's Catholic Church in Horton. Bob and Kay were married 61 years. Bob preceded her in death on July 30, 2011. Bob and Kay lived in Everest for many years, eventually moving to the lake of the Ozarks, then to Salida, Colorado, before moving back to Horton, Kansas. Kay was an avid bridge player, who never turned down an opportunity to play in a bridge game. Kay had an artistic and creative flair for creating stained glass stepping stones, glass fronts for cabinets, and her many beautiful angels. Kay also was a talented seamstress. Spending her time sewing clothes and quilts and any other items that friends and family asked her to, usually without a pattern. Kay shared her "Kolache Recipe" with her granddaughters, Sara and Courtney, teaching them how to make the dough and filling, so the tradition could be passed on. Dan and Wanda were always amazed at their Mom's hidden accomplishments, such as "Miss Aquacade" beauty pageant in 1949, winning second. The interesting fact is their mom could not swim or liked water. Survivors include a daughter, Wanda (Steve) Stoltenberg of Horton, Kansas; son, Dan (Janice) Ruth of Pineville, Missouri; grandchildren, Jake (Misty) Durando of San Diego, California, Courtney (Andrew) Warner of Overland Park, Kansas, Nick Ruth of Merriam, Kansas and Sara (Galen) Harris of Pineville, Missouri; and her special great granddaughters, Isabel Ruth Warner and Emily Nichole Harris. Kay is also survived by her sister, Donna (Al) Hallauer of Horton, Kansas; brother, Bob (Sue) Schuetz of Kingman, Arizona; sister-in-law, Betty (Ruth) Caton. Nieces and nephews include, Barry and Joe Commins and families, John and Beth (Schuetz) Ewing. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Dishon-Maple-Chaney Mortuary in Horton, Kansas. Private family graveside services will be held on Tuesday, November 6, 2012 at the Leavenworth National Cemetery in Leavenworth, Kansas.
