Larena Mary (Welch) Nothstine, 94, of Horton, Kansas passed away on October 26, 2013 at the Stormont Vail Hospital in Topeka, Kansas. She was born on May 4, 1919 in Atchison, Kansas, the oldest of ten children born to George and Emma Deichen Welch. Larena retired from the SS Kresge Company after 28 years where she never missed one day of work! She spent her retirement years traveling to see family and friends and was very involved with church activities. She married Starling Nothstine on January 24, 1943 in Belton, Missouri and immediately inherited an instant family with his two children, Starling, Jr. and Dorothy Schoap of Kansas City, Mo. She loved them as her own and they loved her. That family grew to include 5 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren and 14 great great grandchildren all who called her grandma Rena. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. Her husband,Starling preceded her in death on October 30, 1989. After her husband died, she remained in Horton, where she was a member of the First Baptist Church, a resident of Arbor Knoll and residing at Tri-County Manor at the time of her death. Her legacy of love and caring will live on in the family she leaves behind. Larena was also preceded in death by her son, Starling Jr. and six sisters, Ida Lee Welch, Emma Louise Welch, Marie Welch, Katherine Robinson, Ethel Richards and Elvena Crump; three brothers, Clarence, Ellsworth and George Welch. A celebration of her life will be held on Wednesday, October 30, at 10:30 a.m. at the Dishon-Maple-Chaney Mortuary in Horton where the family will greet friends prior to services. Burial will be at the Old Huron Cemetery, Huron, Kansas. Memorials may be sent to the First Baptist Church in care of the mortuary.
