Lawrence Henry English, 84, of Horton, Kansas, passed away on Thursday, June 19, 2008 at the Tri-County Manor in Horton, Kansas. He was born in Clark County, Kansas on November 15, 1923 the son of Forrest L. & Clara A. Brock English. He grew up on the family farm in Clark County and graduated from grade school at the Lexington Country School. He attended High School at Protection, Kansas, graduating with the class of 1941. After graduating from High School, he worked for various farmers in the area as well as helping his father on the farm. When his father passed away in 1947 he returned home to the family farm and help his mother. On July 10, 1952, he married Eleanor Ely in Greensburg, Kansas. They made their home on the farm where Lawrence had grown up. After several years of poor health he found it necessary to leave the farm and he enrolled in trade school at Okmulgee, Oklahoma in January of 1957. He graduated from there in the spring of 1959, after learning the trades of shoe repair, boot making and saddle making. He with his wife moved to Horton, Kansas in July 1959 where he started a business known as the English Leather Shop. He served Horton and the surrounding communities with his skills until he retired in November of 2003. He became a Christian early in his life and upon moving to Horton, soon found a church home. He became a member of the Horton United Methodist Church where he held various offices and taught a Sunday School Class for many years. He joined the Gideons International in 1960 and remained active in this organization up until his death. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Eleanor English, his sisters, Louise Gray and Maxine Wink. Survivors include several nieces and nephews. Funeral Services will be at 11:00 A.M. on Monday, June 23, 2008 at the United Methodist Church in Horton, Kansas where the family will greet friends 1 hour prior to services. Memorials may be sent to the Gideon's International or to the Tri-County Manor in care of the Dishon-Maple-Chaney Mortuary in Horton, Kansas. Burial will be at the Protection, Kansas Cemetery.
