She attended St. Leo's Catholic School through 8th grade, and graduated from Horton High School in 1943. At this time she went to Grand Junction, Colorado to work in the office of St. Mary's Hospital. She remained there for the greater part of the summer, and then returned to go to work at Menninger Foundation in Topeka, Kansas in the infancy research center. She remained there until her marriage. She and Joe A. Vining were married on February 1, 1949 at St. Leo's Catholic Church. This was a time when gas was rationed, and large buildings had to get special permission to turn on the heat.
