Manuel "Pete" Bernardo Jr., 73, of Horton, Kansas, passed away on Friday, January 4, 2013 at the Stormont Vail Hospital in Topeka, Kansas. He was born on July 26, 1939 in San Jose, California the son of Manuel and Sarah Mayferd Bernardo Sr. After high school Pete graduated from Stanford University. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam Conflict. Pete was a clothing designer of ladies garments for years. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans of Topeka, Kansas and the Horton VFW. In 1961 Pete married Judy in Boonville, Missouri. In 1987 Judy and his son, Paul Bernardo passed away in an automobile accident. He is survived by a host of friends. Pete will be buried at the Leavenworth National Cemetery in Leavenworth on Thursday, January 10, 2013. Friends may call on Wednesday at the Dishon-Maple-Chaney Mortuary in Horton, Kansas. There will be a memorial service at the Tri-County Manor Chapel on Thursday afternoon at 1:30 P.M. with Reverend Earl Dekat officiating.
