Margaret C. Schuetz, 100, of Horton, Kan., passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2017, at the Mission Village Living Center in Horton, Kan. She was born on May 29, 1916, in Downs, Kan., the daughter of Frank and Anna Kurtenbach Schuetz. Margaret was a homemaker, a loving mother, a partner in farming with her husband, and a beautician where she owned and operated Mar-Don's beauty salon for more than 16 years. She was a member of Saint Leo's Catholic Church where she served as Altar Society president. She was also a member of the Hiawatha Elks Club, the Horton Senior Citizens Club and the Horton Hospital Auxiliary. She volunteered her time to several community efforts including the Meals on Wheels program. Above all, she opened her heart and her home to anyone in need.
On Aug. 21, 1935, she married Donald G. Schuetz at Saint Peter's Catholic Church in Mercier, Kan. Together they raised eight children — their true life's purpose. Their hobbies included camping, fishing, playing cards with friends, and dancing on Saturday nights. She loved cooking, gardening and a good joke. Margaret was preceded in death by her husband, Donald; her oldest son, Bernie; four brothers: Earl, Elmer, Dutch and Norman; two sisters, Elsie and Helen; and three grandchildren, Wendy James, Brandon Schuetz and Erin Schuetz. Survivors include: Three daughters, Donna (Jim) Bottom of Horton, Kan.; Cheryl (Pat) McAfee of Horton, Kan.; Mary (Bill) Becker of Denton, Kan.; four sons, Leslie "Pete" (Nora) Schuetz of Hoyt, Kan.; Dale (Carol) Schuetz of Powhattan, Kan.; Rick (Peggy) Schuetz of Hoyt, Kan.; Randy (Carrie) Schuetz of Holton, Kan.; daughter-in-law Sharon Schuetz of Topeka, Kan.; 32 grandchildren; 59 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great grandchildren.
A rosary will be recited at 6 p.m., on Thursday, Jan. 12, with visitation until 8 p.m., at Dishon-Maple-Chaney Mortuary in Horton, Kan. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m., on Friday, Jan. 13, at Saint Leo's Catholic Church, Horton, Kan., with burial to follow at Saint Peter's Cemetery in Mercier, Kan.
