Marvin "Lester" Shivers, 90, of Downingtown, Pennsylvania formerly of Horton, Kansas, passed away Monday, November 2, 2009 at the St. Martha's Manor in Downingtown, Pa. He was born on January 1, 1919 in Robinson, Kansas the son of John and Bessie Cowley Shivers. Lester worked as an automobile mechanic for Schwartz Garage in Everest, Kansas prior to moving to Denver, Colorado in 1943 where he was the service manager for the Dodge Desoto Dealership. In 1958 he was asked to start a Vocational education program at Adams City High School where he taught for several years prior to going to work for the Denver Community College where he taught for over 20 years. While working and raising his family, Lester attended night classes and received his Bachelor Degree in 1965 and his Masters Degree in 1969 from Colorado State University. Lester was a U.S. Army Air Force WW II Veteran, a member of the United Methodist Church of Horton, Kansas and the American Legion, Everest, Kansas. On April 24, 1943 he married Evelyn L. Johnson in Richmond, Virginia. She preceded him in death on July 12, 2009. He is survived by a son, James & wife Sandy Shivers of Downingtown, Pennsylvania; two sisters, Elva Kurtz and Lois Puvogel both of Horton, Kansas three grandchildren, Jennifer Shivers & Val of Berkley, California, Andrea Tancredi & Ethan of West Chester, Pennsylvania, and Mark Sarojak & Keri of San Diego, California; granddaughter in law, Nicole Shivers of Chesapeake, Virginia and eight great grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by his parents, brother, John Shivers Jr., five sisters, Ada Spiker, Opal Shivers, Sarah Shivers, Viola Spiker and Virginia Meerpohl and a grandson, Jarrod Shivers. Funeral services will be at 10:00 A.M. on Monday, November 9, 2009 at the Dishon-Maple-Chaney Mortuary in Horton, Kansas where the family will greet friends on Sunday afternoon from 4:00 to 5:00 P.M.
