Obituary

Michael Dane Mattwaoshshe, known to most as "Mike Matt," passed away on November 24, 2025, at Amberwell Hiawatha Hospital. He was 71 years old.

Mike was preceded in death by his mother Malinda J. Mattwaoshshe, father, Emory M. Mattwaoshshe, brother, Stephen R. Mattwaoshshe, and daughter, Michelle R. Mattwaoshshe.

He is survived by his wife, Emma F. Mattwaoshshe; daughters, Malissa S. Mattwaoshshe, Rachel V. Mattwaoshshe-Helton, Emily J. Mattwaoshshe, and Shawano; his son, Jeramy M. Mattwaoshshe; five grandchildren; and many extended family members and friends.

Mike had a strong exterior and a straightforward way of speaking. He didn't sugarcoat things, and he didn't believe in putting on a show—what you saw was exactly who he was. Beneath that firmness, though, was a man who cared deeply and showed it through action more than words.

Exceptionally smart and hands-on, Mike could fix nearly anything. He had a natural curiosity for how things worked and a talent for building and repairing anything he put his mind to. He was proud of the things he created—big and small—like the bunk beds he made for his girls that were crafted with skill, patience, and love. When something broke, you called Mike, because he had a unique knack for getting things working again.

He had a good sense of humor—blunt at times, lightly sarcastic, but always genuine. He enjoyed joking around and keeping things light when life got heavy. He was spiritual in his own way, stubborn in every way, and proud of the life he built.

What mattered most to him was his family. He was fiercely protective and always there when they needed him. He didn't always say the softest words, but he showed his love through actions: fixing things, building things, teaching things, and standing up for the people he cared about. His grandchildren especially brought out a softer side of him, one filled with pride and joy.

Mike lived life true to himself—strong, capable, loyal, and full of character. His presence, his stories, and his craftsmanship will be remembered and cherished by everyone who loved him.
