Nellie "Esther" Smith, 81, of Horton, Kansas passed away on Sunday, April 28, 2013 at the Tri-County Manor in Horton, Kansas. She was born on September 1, 1931 in Arrington, Kansas the daughter of Harold and Dorothy Nevins Christie. She graduated from ACCHS High School in Effingham, Kansas. Esther worked as a Pharmacy technician and in the business office at the North Kansas City Hospital for over twenty years. After moving from Kansas City to Horton she went to work for Dr. Fransico as a secretary and insurance clerk for many years. She also worked for Silver Shears in Horton, Kansas. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Horton, Kansas and the VFW Auxiliary. On November 10, 1949 she married Harvey Smith in Horton, Kansas. Survivors include her husband, Harvey Smith; three sons, Johnny Smith of Muscotah, Kansas, Thomas Smith of Kansas City, Missouri and Donald Smith of Boston, Massachusetts; a daughter, Dixie Armstrong of Kansas City, Missouri; eight grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother Jess Christie. Funeral services will be at 10:30 A.M. on Wednesday, May 1, 2013 at the United Methodist Church in Horton, Kansas. The family will greet friends on Tuesday evening from 7 to 8:30 P.M. at the Dishon-Maple-Chaney Mortuary in Horton, Kansas. Burial will be at the Muscotah Cemetery.
