Obituary

Retha Guinevere Shufflebarger of Topeka, Kansas, formerly of Horton, Kansas, died August 10, 2020 at the age of 95. Retha was the only child of Orley T. and Mary Genevieve (née White) Skiles born July 18, 1925 at home in rural Furnas County, Nebraska.  She taught in a one room school after graduating from Wilsonville High School.  She attended the University of Nebraska and obtained a BS from Nebraska State Teachers' College, Kearney, NE.  After her first year of teaching high school, she and three of her girlfriends drove the Alaska Highway to Anchorage, AK, when it was still a gravel road. The original plan was to travel to South America, but Alaska was an easier drive. Upon arriving in Anchorage, she found work as a civil servant at the Elmendorf Air Force Base, where she met a handsome man named Bill Shufflebarger. They married in 1953. The new couple relocated to Bryan, TX, farmed in Lancaster, KS, and Wilsonville, NE, and later settled in Horton, Kansas, having three children along the way. Retha retired after a long career as a laboratory/radiology technician at the Horton Community Hospital.  Her final move was to Topeka to be closer to her family after the death of Bill in 2012. She was a beloved member of United Methodist Women, and Countryside United Methodist Church, Topeka. Everyone knew Retha was an avid quilter and reader, and that she would bring the best homemade pie or peanut brittle to every gathering. Spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren was one of her greatest joys. Retha is remembered by her son, Steve (and Gaynell) Shufflebarger of Syracuse, NE, daughters Aurelie (and Ron) Sanders of Topeka, and Brenda (and Kevan) Flaming, of Ames, IA, grandchildren Amy (and Lanny) Campbell, and Philip (and Paula) Sanders of Topeka, Billie Flaming of Ames, IA and Garth Flaming of Appleton, WI, and 6 great-grandchildren. Private graveside services were held at Lancaster, KS cemetery. Memorials are suggested for Horton United Methodist Church in Horton, or Countryside United Methodist Church in Topeka.
