Obituary

Richard Joseph Schuetz 80, of Arlington, Virginia, formerly of Horton, Kansas, passed away at his home on Thursday, November 14, 2013. He was born to Al and Anna Marie Haggard Schuetz on October 21, 1933 in Horton, Kansas. Richard grew up in Mercier, Kansas
and married his high school sweetheart, Joan Walters on Dec. 31, 1953. Richard graduated from Kansas State University in August of 1958 with a Bachelor of Architecture Degree and remained a proud alumnus of K-State.
Richard and Joan had 3 children, Debra Balda, Terry Schuetz and Nicole Schuetz. Richard and Joan divorced in January 2002. Years later, Richard met Joanna Dillard (Mattingly) at a dance; they fell in love and married in the Fiji Islands, then returned to Arlington, VA, where they made their home. Richard served in the Kansas National Guard from Dec 1951 to July 1959. He was an active member of the Knights of Columbus, American Institute of
Architects, Community Associations Institute, Smithsonian Institute,
National Building Museum, the National Rifle Association, and the Phi Kappa Tau Fraternity. Kansas State University presented Rick with the "Jon Wefald Meritorious Service Award," an honor bestowed upon those who
excel in their life and bring credit to their Alma Mater.
Richard will be remembered for his love of life, family, swanky suits and the dance floor! Those who have gone home before him are his parents, Al and Anna Marie, his three brothers twins Damien and Leo and Phillip Schuetz, two sisters, Mary Ann Schuetz and Theresa Roush. He is survived
by his wife Joanna of the home, his step-son Kevin Mattingly, brother-in-law Glenn Dillard and wife, Nancy; sister-in-law Nancy Dillard Pendleton and husband, Ron; three nephews, a niece and three grand nieces. He is also survived by his first wife, Joan of Hiawatha and their children: Debbie Balda of Dallas, Texas, Terry Schuetz of Robinson, Kansas and Nicole Schuetz of Hiawatha, Kansas; grandchildren: Tiffany Smith, Natalie Balda, Jessica and
husband Shawn Anderson, and Haley Ward; great-grandchildren: Rial and Morrissey Smith, as well as his brothers and sisters: Jerry and wife, Sharon Schuetz of Oberlin, Kansas; Mick and wife, Val Schuetz of Horton, Kansas; Danny and wife, Linda Schuetz of Hiawatha, Kansas; Mary and husband, Jim Clouse of Horton, Kansas and Carol and husband, John Smith of Sloan Springs, Arkansas, plus numerous nieces and nephews. A rosary will be recited at the Dishon-Maple-Chaney Mortuary at 7:00pm on Thursday, November 21, 2013 with visitation to follow. A funeral mass will be held at St. Leo's Catholic Church in Horton, Kansas at 10:30 A.M., Friday with burial to follow at St. Peter's Catholic Cemetery in Mercier, Kansas.
