Robert J. Smith, 82, of rural Everest, Kansas, passed away Thursday, November 15, 2012 at the Horton Community Hospital. He was born on May 20, 1930 in Horton, Kansas the son of Robert and Bertha Blasi Smith. Robert served with the U.S. Navy as an Air Traffic Controller during the Korean Conflict. After the service he worked for Rockwell International for a few years before going to work for the U.S. Postal service for 38 years, never taking a sick day as a postal carrier. On June 13, 1954 he married Edith E. Martin in Everest, Kansas. Robert was a member of the First Christian Church in Atchison where he served as a deacon, elder, Sunday school teacher, youth group leader, chairman of the board and was honored as Elder Emeritus. He was active in scouting since 1965 being a Scout Master of Troop #93 at the First Christian Church. He was a member of the National Association of Letter Carriers. In May of 1975 he received the Liberty Bell Award from the Atchison Bar Association for friendly service as a postal carrier, his involvement with Scouts at the First Christian Church and being a devoted father and family man. He received the Outstanding Leadership award 1968-1982 from the Boy Scouts of American. He also received the Southwestern Life Certificate of Achievement for being the top agent in 1991. Survivors include his wife, Edith E. Smith of the home, rural Everest, Kansas; two daughters, Becky Smith of Atchison, Kansas and Amy Smith of Atchison, Kansas; sister, Mary McCallum of Kansas City, Missouri and three grandsons, Brandon Weakley, Dylan McGregor and Ryin Smith. He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Robin Smith on June 19, 2012. Funeral services will be at 10:30 A.M. on Tuesday, November 20, 2012 at the Dishon-Maple-Chaney Mortuary in Horton, Kansas where the family will greet friends prior to the services. Burial with Military Graveside Rites will be at the Miller Cemetery east of Everest, Kansas. Memorials may be sent to the Atchison First Christian Church in care of the mortuary.
