Simon "Eugene" Smith, 83, of Topeka, Kansas, passed away Saturday, May 9, 2009 at his home in Topeka surrounded by his loving family. He was born on February 5, 1926 in Whiting, Kansas the son of Simon & Birdie Ryherd Smith. Eugene was a farmer until 1966 he then went to work until his retirement for Allis Chalmers in Topeka. On January 6, 1949 he married Wilma Jean Kissinger in Hiawatha, Kansas. She preceded him in death on November 12, 2008. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Powhattan, Kansas. Eugene enjoyed car racing, loved animals, camping and was an avid KU fan. He was a dedicated and loving husband, wonderful father and grandfather. Survivors include six daughters, Lucretia Johnson, Barbara Smith, Joyce Jones, Donna Edwards, Judith Freed all of Topeka, Kansas & Rebecca Shockley of Hiawatha, Kansas; three brothers, Harvey Smith, Johnny Smith of Horton, Kansas and Warren Smith of Whiting, Kansas ; a sister, Katherine Spiker of Holton, Kansas; sixteen grandchildren & thirteen great grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by his parents, daughter, Lori Smith & six brothers, Junius, Sanford, Leslie, Norman, Peter and Orin Smith. Funeral services will be at 2:00 P.M. on Wednesday, May 13, 2009 at the Dishon-Maple-Chaney Mortuary in Horton, Kansas where the family will greet friends on Tuesday evening from 7:00 to 8:30 P.M.
