Viola C. Pope, 86, of Horton, Kansas, passed away on Monday, August 9, 2010 at the Tri-County Manor in Horton, Kansas. She was born on July 7, 1924 in Park, Kansas the daughter of Adam & Lucy Windholz Geist. Viola owned and operated Vi's Cafe & Bowling Alley in Sharon Springs, Kansas for several year prior to moving to Horton. She then went to work for the Horton Garment Factor and Pat's Thriftway. Vi then became a Certified Nurses Aid working for the Horton Hospital and then became a caregiver to the elderly taking care of them in their homes. She was a member of the St. Leo's Catholic Church, Altar Society, Horton Senior Citizens and the Garment Workers Union. On November 11, 1951 she married Ruben A. Pope in Collyer, Kansas. He preceded her in death on March 30, 1977. Survivors include a daughter, Mary Brown of Horton, Kansas; three sons, LaVern Pope of Raleigh, North Carolina, Randy Pope of Leawood, Kansas and Gary Pope of Vassar, Kansas; brother, Elmer Geist of Grinnell, Kansas; sister, Evelyn Davis of Wichita, Kansas; twelve grandchildren and one great grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her parents, sister, Lucy Harris; six brothers, Jerry, Acquin, Clarence, Emmanuel, Alvin and Adrian Geist. Funeral mass will be at 10:00 A.M. on Friday, August, 13, 2010 at the St. Leo's Catholic Church in Horton, Kansas. The family will greet friends on Thursday evening from 7:00 to 8:00 P.M. at the Dishon-Maple-Chaney Mortuary in Horton, Kansas. Inurnment will be on Saturday, August 14, 2010 at 10:00 A.M. at the Hawkeye Cemetery in Rexford, Kansas. Memorials may be made to the Tri-County Manor and may be sent in care of the mortuary.
