Obituary

Virginia Derrel Meerpohl, 86, of Horton, Kansas, passed away Tuesday, June 2, 2009 at the Stormont Vail Hospital in Topeka, Kansas. She was born on October 12, 1922 in Robinson, Kansas, the daughter of John & Bessie Cowley Shivers. Virginia was raised north of Everest, Kansas and went to grade school in the Union Dale School District and graduated from Everest High School in 1940. In January of 1942 she moved to Horton, Kansas with her family and candled eggs for the military. In 1943 she went to work for Montgomery Wards as a sales clerk and then went on to work in the office as a credit clerk. In August of 1960 she went to work at the Bank of Horton as a bookkeeper and cashier retiring after 27 years in November 1987. Virginia then served as a hostess at the Golden Eagle Casino for a number of years. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, Horton Garden Club both of Horton, Kansas and enjoyed crocheting, fishing, reading and gardening. On August 17, 1945 she married Edward "Mike" Meerpohl in Hiawatha, Kansas. He preceded her in death on January 11, 2003. She is survived by two daughters, Margie & her husband Les Potterf of Pleasant Valley, Missouri and Alice Kay & her husband J.P. Smith of Everest, Kansas; brother, Lester Shivers of Downingtown, Pennsylvania; three sisters, Viola Spiker of Topeka, Kansas, Elva Kurtz and Lois Puvogel both of Horton, Kansas; five grandchildren,Barry Potterf, Kristi Smith, Kari Brown, Jason Smith and Allison Widing; and eleven great grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her parents, brother, John Shivers Jr., three sisters, Opal Shivers, Sarah Shivers and Ada Spiker. Funeral services will be at 10:30 A.M. on Saturday, June 6, 2009 at the Dishon-Maple-Chaney Mortuary in Horton, Kansas where the family will greet friends on Friday evening from 7:00 to 8:30 P.M. Interment will be at the Horton City Cemetery. Memorials may be sent to the Virginia Meerpohl memorial fund to be designated later and may be sent in care of the mortuary.
