Walter A. Young, 89 of Everest, Kansas, passed away on Thursday, October 20, 2011 at the Horton Community Hospital. He was born on August 5, 1922 in rural Everest, Kansas the son of William P. and Clara M. Larson Young. Walter was enlisted in the U.S. Army serving in the Air Corps from 1942 - 1945 as a flight engineer logging 6,000 hours flight time during his service during WW II. He was mainly involved in training B-17 and B-24 bomber crews. On May 15, 1943 he married Avis L. Greer in Hiawatha, Kansas. Upon discharge from the Army in 1945, they settled in rural Everest, Kansas where Walter farmed until his retirement in 1984. He was a life-long resident of Everest and enjoyed fishing, hunting and gardening. Avis preceded him in death on March 12, 2011 after 67 years of marriage. Survivors include a son, William (Bill) and wife, Marilyn Young of Bendena, Kansas; two aunts, Lydia (Mag) Nixon of California and Margaret Young of Everest, Kansas and several cousins. Walter was also preceded in death by his parents, and an infant daughter, Sheryl Jean Young in 1945. Funeral services will be at 10:30 A.M. on Tuesday, October 25, 2011 at the Dishon-Maple-Chaney Mortuary in Horton, Kansas where the family will greet friends on Monday evening from 7:00 to 8:00 P.M. Burial with Military Graveside Rites will be at the Miller Cemetery east of Everest, Kansas. Memorials may be made to the Horton Community Hospital or the Everest Christian Church and may be sent in care of the mortuary.
