Obituary

Warren Smith, 89, of Whiting, Kansas passed away on July 2, 2009 at the Holton Community Hospital. He was born on April 27, 1920 on the family farm in rural Whiting, Kansas, the 7th of 11 children born to Simon & Birdie Ryherd Smith. Warren served in the U.S. Navy aboard the U.S.S. Sperry during World War II in the South Pacific. He returned home in 1946, he then was united in marriage to Ruth I. Lockwood on January 19, 1947 at Holton, Kansas. They moved and raised their 4 children on the Smith Home Place where he was a farmer and stockman until his retirement in 1984. Warren was active in many community organizations; he was a Leader and organizer of the Whiting Beavers 4-H club, served on the Jackson County Planning Commission, he served on the Rainbow Telephone Co-Operative Association board for 30 years, the Jackson County Conservation district and received first place in a pasture improvement contest. He also served and was past president of the Farm Bureau Board, was a member of the Whiting United Methodist Church, VFW in Horton and American Legion in Wetmore, Kansas. He is survived by his wife Ruth Smith of the home, Whiting, Kansas; two daughters, Karen & husband Mike Schaefer of Topeka, Kansas and Rhonda & husband Bruce Cormier of Soldier, Kansas; two sons, Stan & wife Di Smith of Red Oak, Iowa and Dennis & wife Pam Smith of Whiting, Kansas; two brothers, Harvey Smith and Johnny Smith both of Horton, Kansas; sister, Katherine Spiker of Topeka, Kansas; ten grandchildren and twenty one great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, seven brothers, Junius, Sanford, Leslie, Norman, Peter, Orin and Eugene Smith. Funeral services will be at 10:00 A.M. on Monday, July 6, 2009 at the Dishon-Maple-Chaney Mortuary in Horton, Kansas where the family will greet friends on Sunday evening from 7:00 to 8:30 P.M.. Burial with Military graveside rites will be at the Horton Cemetery. Memorials may be sent to the Whiting United Methodist Church in care of the mortuary.
