Obituary

Wilma Jean Smith, 78, of Topeka, Kansas, passed away on November 12, 2008 at her home in Topeka, Kansas surrounded by her loving family. She was born on December 24, 1929 in Hiawatha, Kansas the daughter of Ted Andrew & Mary Pearl Kessler Kissinger. On January 6, 1949 she married Simon Eugene Smith in Hiawatha, Kansas. They would have celebrated their 60th Anniversary. Wilma helped her husband on the family farm, served as the Brown County District Clerk, worked for the Egg Plant, Horton Garment Factory, Alco, Blue Cross & Blue Shield, Hallmark Cards and retired from AT&T as a repair clerk after 15 years of service. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Powhattan, Kansas. Wilma was a dedicated and loving wife, Wonderful mother and grandmother. She enjoyed CB radios, talking with friends, car racing, loved animals and was an avid KU fan. Survivors include her husband, Eugene Smith of the home; six daughters, Lucretia D. Johnson, Barbara E. Smith, Joyce E. Jones, Donna F. Edwards, Judith K. Freed all of Topeka, Kansas and Rebecca J. Shockley of Hiawatha, Kansas; one brother, Fred Kissinger of Clay Center, Kansas; sixteen grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and daughter, Laurie Smith. Funeral services will be at 2:00 P.M. on Saturday, November 15, 2008 at the Dishon-Maple-Chaney Mortuary in Horton, Kansas where the family will greet friends on Friday from 7:00 to 8:30 P.M.
